Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) - for BCC.

This is a treatment for some non-aggressive types of BCC’s. A topical treatment called ALA, is applied to the skin cancer for 3 hours using a dressing. After 3 hours, the dressing is removed and the ALA is activated by a PDT red light source. This takes 8 minutes. The reaction begins within hours and lasts about 7 days.

The procedure is then repeated a second time, 7 days later. It’s main benefit is that it rarely leaves a scar.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) - for sun damage or sun-spots.

This is a treatment for extensive sun damage or multiple sun-spots over large areas. A preparation cream is applied to the treatment area for 3-4 weeks to prepare the skin for the procedure. On the day, a topical treatment called ALA, is applied to the sun damaged area and allowed to absorb into the skin for 1 hour. This time is spent at the surgery in a light proof room. Following this you leave the practice and go home to your verandah. The ALA in your skin is then activated by daylight over a 2 hour period. The reaction begins within hours and only lasts about 7 days. It’s quick.

Efudix cream.

A topical treatment that you apply yourself to areas of extensive sun damage and multiple sun-spots. The treatment takes 4 - 6 weeks, as does the reaction.

Aldara Cream.

A topical treatment that you apply yourself for the treatment of superficial BCC or for extensive sun damage and multiple sun-spots. The treatment takes 4 - 6 weeks, as does the reaction.

Cryotherapy.

“Freezing” of sun spots is the simplest method to remove these “pre-cancerous” lesions providing there are not too many. If sun spots are extensive, we will usually discuss “field treatment” with PDT, aldara or efudix cream.
